Every single day your path in life is crossed by those of other people. Most of the time, you make these encounters so many times that they pass without much thought. A daily encounter might range from something fast and simple like two eyes meeting without words, to saying a small comment which leads to something much bigger as you two get into having an actual conversation. Each of these encounters (no matter how big or small), can leave a trace in your soul without you even noticing.

I’ve always contemplated about these encounters and what possible meaning they might carry. One afternoon I was walking outside enjoying the beautiful weather and almost bumped into a complete stranger, we managed to dodge each other and exchanged smiles. Then I saw a woman coming his way and on the moment their steps met, her body language changed and she said something to him which was most likely of a flirty nature because he stopped for a second with an apparent shy smile painted on his face. It could have been an encounter that meant nothing for the woman, but I think it is a one that surely has left its traces on the guy.
A friend once told me about a man she met in the airport. She saw a friendly face eyeing her so she smiled and he smiled back. Suddenly, they found themselves having a conversation that neither wanted to end. It was a brief encounter, but made them want to have an actual meeting and talk more. The two of them ended up doing that a few times. He liked her and she liked him but neither could say it because they were from totally different continents. Needless to say, those two ended up together for quite some time. They eventually parted, but each has now left a trace in the other. My friend kept wondering about why life made their paths cross. Was there a hidden message or was it just a meaningless coincidence?

How about the stranger who helped you pickup items from the ground when your shopping bag tore apart while leaving the store? Consider the impact of a simple word of kindness you said to someone while walking down the street. Have you ever wondered that you could have just made an encounter with the love of your life and you didn’t realize it then you spend the rest of your life searching for their whereabouts?
When it comes to human interaction, I find myself a non-believer in coincidences. Instead, I believe that each encounter we make means something, even if we’re not able to realize it. Perhaps that is because we don’t give it much thought and simply think of it as an invisible given in life. Perhaps we should meet new people, initiate in more conversations with strangers, or even just smile more. Maybe our world has grown darker and uglier because we’ve become more isolated and afraid of other people. Stores and restaurants might be open, but the minds and hearts of many remain closed.
